Winter Turns into spring In Finland – Dark and Moist

This spring from mid March, it has been a long, dark and wet awakening to the Finnish bright spring weather. The birds move slowly in to the sea shore nesting places. The moisture is in the air and also deep in the ground. After the thick ice on the ground frost is everywhere, in meadows and roads. Sea is pretty cold and the ice vanished from the sea in the first days of april. The sun is slowly coming behind the thick overcast, only a few days in a week. You can only think of how much I envy the bright and warm days in the Southern Tenerife

The Ice

As you can see from the photo`s the colour is bluish, except the first photo which is B and W. The first month was exceptionally dark and dull here in the western archipelago. Not much snow at all in the woods, but a type of solid steel ice that covered open areas. Snow ploughing was easy because of the steel ice, but the road was slippery. We had about 45 cm of ice on the shore and my poor harbour was totally frozen. Some broken concrete supports after the winter storms

The First Birds

The birds bring me always the Spring. The weather is still cold and only paths of free water in Airisto sea. Swans are always the first to come even if there is only a little path of open sea. Cormorants with Seagulls are the inhabitants in this islet. Of course Common Eiders and Great Crested Grebes what I like most, I used to have a motor boat named like that, very nice bird. The light is also brighter now and the sun appears more often. The ice still remain in most of the parts as near beaches

The Spring is winning

It takes time for the Spring to come, especially this year. Many of our friends say the same, in Helsinki area they had record much snow and also a lot minus degrees, like – 25 celsius. Now after mid April the sun is more often seen, like once or twice a week. The colour of the nature is more bright and not any more bluish, although we live by the sea. You can feel and see the moisture floating around us here in the archipelago. But the atmosphere is now positive and the landscape is turning into beautiful again, like every spring

Boat builder´s Homecoming

I came this year to Finland late or in another words too early, mid March. First I digged my car out of the snow in Helsinki area and froze my fingers and feet. Homecoming was crude because of today´s energy prizes, we decided to turn down the heat in our house while away to +12 -15 celsius. First night we had +15 or so. We turned the pellet heating to the water elements to +68 degrees and also blew one of our main fuses. Yes, next morning about +17-18 and after two days the heath had returned to the whole house. Also the terraces survived with lower temperatures without freezing the floor heating pipes. We had a few industrial blowers in each terrace set to 5 degrees. A good extra insurance with our relative who visited once a week to add the pellets and check the heating system.
