Spell of the Night-Time

Good golden oldies as summer starts in Finland

Midnight sun – cold wind blowing from the North – Bonfires with good food and company

The Cook and the South American bonfire specialist with this big parilla and fish a la plancha. This is something new for her to wait and see the fish to be ready.

This time the start of the summer is so cold, the whole party has to be arranged in the sea terrace behind the glass doors.

The cold wind blows from the North, over Rymãttylä. Nice be behind the terrace glasses after the warmth of the sauna. Tomorrow the wind will really howl in house corners and roof tiles

After a while pink and hazy sky in the horizon, early spring weather, this year. You can feel the cold seawater and the atmosphere of the whole scenery. Moisture is coming up from the sea. Nikon D700, Nikkor 105mm 1:2 D lens

Three photographs in the darkest of the night. Beach house terrace and the cliffs to the sea.

Cliffs and the sea lit by candles. There is not much light, but the reflections can still be seen from the dark water. Nikon D700, Nikkor 1:1,2 famous 50mm lens

Sailing is my hobby. White sails and the blue sea, what more can you wish

Artistic view of a famous 8 Metre Class, Iroquois gliding in a summer breeze. On the background a Swan 43. Two iconic yachts.

Our Albin Express, S/y Xpequod close hauled in a light Breeze. This small racing boat is light and pics up even the lightest wind to accelerate fast

S/y Xpequod running ahead of thundery clouds. White sails against the dark and threatening sky. There is still a spot, open clear sky seen

Working with my boat just before the darkest times land over Finland, winter is coming and people have to move inside or even better to move to Southern latitudes

We found an old bucket of Spinnaker varnish in the boat shed, one of the best. A few decades old but perfect. This varnish brings up the right colour in the wood and the shine is spectacular. It’s autumn and one of the last nights in the water. Time to hoist the boat on the hard.

Here we go again to South as we do in many of our sailing trips. The boat is today in the Canaries where warm winds blow

S/y Naneux Alias Atlantic Navigator in Visby, early in the morning. Just arrived and the crew disappeared into the harbour. Camera X-pro1 with 35mm 1:2,0 Fujinon lens

Now we are in Southern latitudes, sun is up and we hear the music play, beautiful ladies and a cold Jarra on the table!

New year 2023 and the party goes on in the hotel complexes in Puerto San Miguel, Tenerife. Fireworks light the sky. The night is warm and life is smiling. In the darkest hours, dog watch as we sailors say, some humidity on deck this New Years eve. January in the mornings normally 80 – 90% humidity but it goes down to 60 – 70% when the sun comes up and warms up the surroundings

Thank you for watching my photos

Atlantic Navigator New challenges for the skipper

A famous old boat S/y Nauta of Eloy R. Garcia from Los Cristianos

My stories of Atlantic Navigator are continuing with this old and famous Canarian Yacht S/y Nauta.

The yachts first owner was skipper D. Eloy R. Garcia. He solo circumnavigated the globe when he was 68 years old, accompanied with his most loyal dog Grumete in 1996 -1997. He started from Los Cristianos in Tenerife, Canaries and made a solo circumnavigation in 246 days, total voyage was 24.623 Nm

Eloy sailed first South-West from the Tenerife to Cape Verde and to Caribbean and Venezuela. He sailed through Panama Canal to the Pacific Ocean North of the Galapagos island to Marquesas and Christmas islands, continuing South of Nauru in the Pacific Ocean. Eloy continued to sail North of Papua New Guinea to the Macassar strait between Borneo and South Sulawesi in Indonesia to the Indian ocean. Eloy continued to Singapore in Malesia and sailed Nauta in between Malesia and Sumatra and further to Islas Maldivas. Nauta crossed the Red Sea and Suez Canal to Port Said and to the Mediterranean Sea. Eloy sailed Nauta South of Peloponnesos, through whole Mediterranean Sea, of course stopping at Puerto Banus in Marbella and back to Tenerife.

Nauta logged 24.623 Nm on his voyage. He sailed inside the pleasant latitudes near the equator and through Panama and Suez canals, so called Milky Way route. See a map of the journey at the end of the story.

After Eloy R. Garcia died, his sons sold the boat in December 2004. Sociedad Canaria de Ecogestion SL / company Solitec SLU bought the boat in 2005 from Eloy R. Garcia´s relatives. Jose Julian Naranjo Perez, the owner of Solitec SLU has been taking care of S/y Nauta since 2005

Today S/y Nauta is in remarkable condition, although many years have passed and many nautical miles have been sailed. Mostly we must thank Jose Naranjo Perez who has been maintaining the boat with intense care from the year 2005, when he bought the yacht Nauta. The yacht is a true blue water cruising vessel up to all standards. The hull has enough size and volume, the width is 4,05 m, the leading edge of the keel is tilted backwards a lot in case of an impact. the trailing edge has a modern elliptical form. The keel is shallow and with a wide bulb in order to reach to interesting places. The hull is supported with many vertical stringers and four horizontal stringers from floor boards and upwards joining the keel stocks to the shroud fittings. The rudder axell is attached in the hull and skeg.

S/y Nauta today:

The yacht is a Jeanneau Voyage 12.50 manufactured in the year 1989.

A lot is done with the yacht and a lot is still going to be done to transform the yacht Nauta to a modern blue water boat. More ecological aspects and self sustainability in electricity etc. The Yacht has today an advanced solar charging system which is built on the top of stainless steel targa at the back of the boat. We are just now installing a Watt & Sea hydro electric power plant to Nauta. Old generator is removed. Shore power arrangements are also up to date with inverter technology to convert power voltage. A smart pressure water system that can be connected direct to the berths water systems ashore, when available. Shower drainage is a small 12V sump system what can easily be developed to work with filters to remove bath soap and skin residue. A new septic tank is under work for the toilet waste water. The fridge compressor got more ventilation and is running modestly for a really huge volume cooling cabinet. All navigational lights are drawn to the mast during the rigg renovation 2022 and working perfect. The lightning system is with 12 V led in all the cabins and optional with 220 V in main salong.

Navigare Necesse est Vivere non est Necesse

I’m about the same age, 69 as Eloy, when he started his voyage round the world. I made this spring a decision that I will not lay down sailing on the contrary sail more and explore Atlantic Ocean more thoroughly. A famous Canarian yacht S/y Nauta was available. This was a good time for decision making. Through many lucky coincidences we changed our trusted friend S/y Naneux to a new yacht S/y Nauta. I’m not planning to sail around the globe, but want to spend more time on the water when I’m older. We are now a group of old sea dogs and newborn sailors who have decided to sail and maintain this famous yacht. We have experience of boat building and maintenance for decades. We love sailing and boat life, we have been sailing for thousands of sea miles. We shall see what Atlantic Ocean and its coastal areas have for us.

Photo slide show of S/y Nauta today, and some changes recently made to the boat

First glas of bubbling around the main salon table. May this sailing yacht bring Joy

Eloy R. Garcia solo Circumnavigation

Great memories and farewell to my dear boat S/y Naneux

I´m still going to continue Atlantic Navigator stories and photo´s with a new boat. Area for our navigation is going to be the same, North Atlantic Ocean. With the new boat I have better possibilities to have more crew and space. I´m getting older and I need some strong arms and bigger winches for the Atlantic Ocean. Many beautiful sceneries are still to be found and explored.

Here I choose the photo´s that have been looked most and some significant old memories. Atlantic Navigator alias S/y Naneux has showed us many memorable places starting from the year 1988. It has served us extremely well and the boat itself has got unique maintenance and upgrading. Today I can leave her in excellent condition to the new Belgian skipper.

We have an old photo of S/y Naneux first mate Eva and my cousin Meta. I bought the boat S/y Naneux with Eva in 1988. The second photo is not taken by me, but I´m on the helm with S/y Naneux chasing a Swan 38 (Swanita) with our brand new sponsored spinnaker. Sailing tight race with S/y Swanita in the Åland Islands, our family members in the photo. Kati, my daughter and me on our beach having an Indian style bonfire in the spring 2014, when we planned the journey to the Southern latitudes.

We decided to support our dear artist friend Stefan Lindfors and his Symbiosis statue which is situated in Turku. It was planned that there are engraved two identical plates. One which is staying at home in the Symbiosis statue and the other for our S/y Naneux to reach faraway places. Somehow someone lost the one which was supposed to be in S/y Naneux. I was first angry but time changes the memories, and to meet faraway places was more important than an engraved plate in our boat.

Picture of the whole crew that helped me to build S/y Naneux and also the crew who sailed away that night towards the Southern latitudes. One of the most looked picture is Enkhuizen lighthouse in Markemeer, Holland. You can see that we continue from the Dover harbour in the English channel, Westwards with favourable winds.

I have a lot of memories from my crews along these years. S/y Naneux 1999 poster is of the best crews for Baltic and North Sea. We had many memorable dog watches and harbour nights in Christiansö and Kiel. Even the wild horses appear to us in Rendsburg, in Kiel Canal with our fellow yacht S/y NiinaMari, a boat from Baltic Yacht. They were heading to Caribbean and tried to hire our precious crew member to aboard their ship. Negotiations were long in the streets of Rendsburg.

We continue our cruise through the Dutch sand banks. I planned that special area carefully at home ” The Dutch delta area”. Lots of moving sandbanks, but we even survived a severe wind gust and thunder in front of Rotterdam. Sailed to a safe harbor and got good fish meal.

Dog watches are grey and the vessels we meet huge in the morning waves. We meet of course a lot interesting boats and crews in various harbours, Brest, La Coruna, Bayona, all of them historical cities for the seamen.

Fishing along the coastal waters and in the deep sea. First mate Pertti and his son Timo tried to catch fish, but this time our fellow sailors save our neck. We got a huge fillet of tuna from the pro`s. Riitta and Pertti planning the menu in San Sebastian de La Gomera. Pertti, our excellent Chef made us Sushi and great tuna steaks.

In fog with First Mate Eva and her sister “nearing Trysunda in Höga kusten” in Sweden many, many years ago. S/y Swanita reaching us out of the fog bank. On the helm is Eva and her sister Tupu.

Kati is steering “oreja de burro” carefully. S/y Naneux in Laxe, Galichia, an unforgettable part of Spain. Las Palmas in Gran Canaria. La Palma behind the waves and the most beautiful Arrifana bay in Portugal, a sweet scent of the pine trees is tangible.

Three memorable lighthouses: Christiansö lighthouse, St Margaret´s Bay lighthouse (Dover lighthouse) and approaching Torre de Hercules in one stormy night. Torre de Hercules is Europe´s oldest lighthouse.

Every photo of these three lighthouses have a very different story. Christiansö a former Danish military Island, situated all alone in Southern Baltic. A far away island for Finnish summer sailors, hard to find earlier with only a log and a compass. My daughter fell in love with that beautiful island 2014. The whole crew had an unforgettable dinner in the old walls of that old castle.

St. Margaret´s Bay lighthouse photo I took from the upper deck of the great ocean liner, Voyager of the Seas 1999. Early morning just after the sunrise with a Nikon 300D and a 600 mm Tamron lens. My shoulder as camera support. A Maiden voyage of that ship from Turku to Miami.

The picture of Hercules lighthouse I took when approaching La Coruna on heavy swell 2014. The town La Coruna disappeared behind every wave. Everything was wet, even both cameras. I´m lucky we got this photo full of feeling and atmosphere. A trusted friend Nikon 700 D and a 180 mm Nikkor lens
