wooden interior – restoring – and building new – Data channel for you

Atlantic Navigator story continues with restoring our sailing yacht Nauta. Wooden interior works and technical issues on deck

Teak, mahogany or oak are the most common boat building materials. Solid wood frames combined with plywood bulkheads

Here complicated handcrafted wooden parts accompanied with stainless steel. It will be a neath wooden ladder that can be attached to our toe rail. The reason for this one step ladder is that the new yacht is much higher on freeboard. Help is needed for the crew to jump on the pier. Lots of other wooden pieces and bigger parts to be recovered to it´s glory

A few hints of materials and methods how to do the work

Best possible polyurethane lacquer, Spinnaker, the red one I like the most. It is very thin so you need many layers. There are more very high class products like Epifanes and many more. On solid wood I use clear lacquer, but on plywood bulkheads, doors and lockers mat lacquer.

Today’s two component Epoxy glues are magnificent, you must watch not to spill the glue to your hands. Epoxy is very harmful to your body

Taking care of dark spots around the corners

Dark spots must be removed of the wooden parts. Be careful not to sand the plywood too much, otherwise you’ll end up changing the whole plywood sheet!

Good scrape and sandpaper are the right tools, you can also use paint remover to get the hard lacquer layer first away!

Dark or spoiled area on plywood sheets must be sanded all the way to the healthy wood. Careful with sanding, the outer layer is under one millimeter. Take apart all parts if possible.

Solid wooden lists can be sanded a lot to get the nice colour back. If one plywood is damaged badly, or full of stains or lot of old holes. You can change the whole outer layer of of that big bulkhead area. Gluing a new layer of veneer over old plywood bulkhead, be aware, that is a professional job.

It will bring out the whole glory of your interior. You can also play with colours on certain areas. Make plan and get professional design aid to get good results.

You can get it quite nice. This boat´s interior is more than thirty years old and the yacht has been sailing around the world, a lot sailed mileage and a lot of salt water. Reparations have already demanded a lot of man hours and a lot persons have been involved to get this elegant blue ocean yacht a personal vintage look. My friend Jose Perera has maintained this yacht with great care since 2005. I try to finish this great work of a famous solo circumnavigation yacht S/y Nauta of Don Eloy Garcia. I´m a professional boat builder and designer, I try to bring my professional skills to get this yacht into a new glory

Here we have the result and many stylish changes: Coach roof sides are of solid teak wood. The panel which covers the hull and deck joint is also solid teak. We have painted cabinet doors and the panels behind pantry with dark grey colour (graphite). The grey colour continues also round the micro oven. You can tune up your interior also with contrast colours to cover on damaged areas or just to add charismatic effect to your dull teak or mahogany interior works

This was the dull beginning with too much teak wood

Changes of the old interior with too much teak in sight. Total refit of the wooden plywood

Floor board model plywood in coach roof sides. The white wooden stripes are not matching with the cabin lines. Too much teak is used over all in the interior. You can also see a lot of dark areas in the plywood sheets, that must be sanded away

Changing the main bulkhead teak veneer sheet to new

Main bulkhead was damaged with a lot of holes from old instruments and old design. Look how a new plywood sheet in main bulkhead refreshes up the whole interior

This is very nice and looks good. Coach cabin sides are nicely covered with solid teak wood. Side deck have been upholstered with new white vinyl cloth

The same graphite colour is used also on the stairs down the bridge deck

Detail photos of the woodworking sessions

New Iridium hub and text messaging equipment are getting a teak pod to keep on place when the weather gets rough
